Athletic Improvement Bids

Updated: Sep 23, 2019

Bids for Athletic Improvements were opened at the MGRHS today (Sept. 20) at 10 am.

Alternate # 1 refers to the track.

Alternate # 2 is an alternate infill material, Brockfill instead of crumb rubber. Brockfill is wood product. From the company website: "The challenge is to create a system that feels like natural turf and that means changing the one component athletes hate most: crumb rubber infill. It’s too hot, it smells, it’s too abrasive, it’s unstable under foot and its end of life is an environmental tragedy. As global warming continues, climate change will make these surfaces literally too hot to play on."

Here are the numbers in an easier to read table with some totals added.

Clark Companies has the lowest overall base bid at $2.847 M and lowest bid including the track at $3.396 M. And if we include the alternative wood-based infill material, they are still the lowest bid at $3.549 M.

But they don't have the lowest bid for artificial turf alone. Mountain View can provide the artificial turf field at $1.054 M compared to Clark at $1.332 M. Traverse Consulting, the school's advisor, had estimated the turf field at $1.1M. Choosing the alternative infill increases the gap, R.A.D at $1.118 M compared to $1.485 M for Clark.

Adding lighting to the field comes at a significant premium. Total cost for field with lights is $1.47 M for R.A.D. and $1.712 M for Clark.
